As the first rays of light peeked out over the horizon, silence loomed over the still mostly sleeping campus. However, another source of light joined the others a quick flash at first as it dipped low out of the cover of the clouds above. At a distance, it appeared to be a shooting star plummeting from the heavens but as it came closer and closer to the earth it began apparent that there was a figure centered in that strange glow. It ducked lower and lower on it's approach towards the campus and as it reached the edge of the grounds it swung almost level with the ground and slowed significantly.
As it skimmed the lawn, the light cut out and revealed the figure of a young man. He was dressed only in a pair of somewhat tattered pajama pants and a pair of flight goggles. Splotches of soot and ash dotted his body and clothing and there was a lingering smell of wood smoke around him. Sam let out a quiet ground as his bare feet contacted the wet, grassy lawn and he skidded a few feet as his momentum used itself up.
The Kentucky born mutant pushed up the flight goggles away from his eyes and rested them on the top of his head. He froze for a moment, holding his breath as he watched the school house for any signs that his arrival had woken anybody up. When he saw no sudden signs of stirring he gave a sigh of relief. He rolled his shoulders a bit to work out the adrenaline fueled tension and started a slow walk towards the nearest entrance. The following night had been busy for him. A friend in New York City had called with the report of a big apartment fire that the firefighters were having a heck of a time with and there had still been people inside.
Given the urgency, Sam hadn't bothered to alert anyone else or even get properly dressed. He jetted over there as fast as his ability would allow and managed to haul out all the trapped people within a few trips. It hadn't been easy and now that it was over, the action-fueled energy had dropped right out of him and he felt like collapsing somewhere quiet for the next thirty hours or so. He glanced at himself and all the soot and ash and wrinkled his nose. "Ah need a shower before Ah do anythin' else."
As if on cue, his stomach suddenly growled loudly at him and he blinked. He gave a rueful grin and changed direction slightly to tip-toe towards the kitchen. "Well, maybe a quick bite of somethin' t'eat first, wouldn't hurt..."
