As the X-Men enter the 21st century, they still find themselves in a world that hates and fears them. A world that is unsure of what they are or what their presence means for the remainder of the world. The public assurances of Professor Charles Xavier that the mutant population only seeks coexistence are challenged by hate-mongers like the Friends of Humanity and further put to the test when destructive mutants like Magneto plot for homo superior domination.
In an effort to pacify the Master of Magnetism, the United Nations ordered the island of Genosha to be established as a permanent mutant country under the supervision of Magneto. But how could one country satisfy the lust of a man who felt his race should be ruling the world? Magnus departed from Genosha with one goal on his mind – to bring America to its knees, bowing before his rule.
With stolen Sentinel technology at his disposal, Magneto planned to lay waste to America’s capital. He would have succeeded, were it not for the X-Men. Though the city was damaged and lives were lost, even Apocalypse himself entering the fray could not bring about defeat that day. Months later, the country’s fear of mutants has only grown, leading the government to respond with the initiation of the Mutant Registration Act, a bill spearheaded by Senator and presidential hopeful Robert Kelly.
Momentum is turning against the mutant race. With Charles Xavier’s dream of coexistence between humans and mutants fading, the X-Men continue to fight and defend a world that now more than ever fear them.
